A Timurid panel of incredibly complex and sophisticated Islamic geometry by a master. Many of the geometric arabesques, especially of the inner portions, after the outermost square framing arabesques, are exceptional and do not repeat in their design. The arabesques are very deeply cut and in three levels. They are stained in red, black and yellow. Possibly from a door, or from a large royal sarcophagus adapted as a door panel. The Rhode Island School of Design has a large sarcophagus that is complete and is of the same date, illustrated in A.U Popes, ‘Survey of Persian Art’. Woodwork of this complexity, in the Timurid period is rare.
