A striking rare Timurid star-shaped tile. The ground is deeply carved with vivid glazed cobalt blue, turquoise in the centre, leaving small and large arabesque design on the central unglazed star. A very fine quality carving with scrolling motifs, with a raised turquoise border.
The quality of the carving on the design is rare to find in ceramic. It has more in common with Timurid stone carving such as is seen on the cenotaph offered as lot 150 in the Art of Islamic and Indian Worlds sale, Christies, October 2008.
For further examples of similar work in stone please see Thomas W. Lenz and Glenn D. Lowry, Timur and the Princely Vision, exhibition catalogue, Los Angeles, 1989, fig.70, p.209, and no.89, pp.190 and 347).
