BASHIR MOHAMED stands as a pioneering figure in the Islamic and Asiatic art world. Born in Malaysia in 1939, he developed a interest in the arts at an early age. Exceptionally bright, he moved to London to study law at sixteen. During this time his pursuit of his identity and passion for art history led him to further studies in Cairo, Al-Azhar University. Upon his return to the UK, Bashir quickly distinguished himself amongst his peers in the London art market, earning recognition for his discerning eye and profound understanding of the field.
Recognising his expertise, he was headhunted by Jacob Rothschild to work as a consultant and Islamic art advisor to Colnaghi Gallery. Subsequently, he established what became the highly acclaimed Islamic & Indian art department at Spink & Sons, where he was head of department and buyer until 1980, prior to its eventual acquisition by Christie's. In recognition of his contributions, Bashir was invited to pursue an MPhil in Islamic Art at Oxford University, these experiences served as a springboard for his subsequent ventures.
In 1980 he established his first gallery on Old Bond Street, with two additional gallery spaces on Davies Street and Broadbent Street in London, throughout the years Bashir Mohamed meticulously acquired major works of Islamic and Asian Art, solidifying his reputation as an esteemed collector.
At this time Bashir also dedicated himself to the Furusiyya Art Foundation, as curator and buyer. A selection of the Foundation's collection was showcased in a prominent exhibition at the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris, and published in 'The Arts of the Muslim Knight,' which he authored. He has recently completed the remaining volumes of this series, soon to be published.Bashir's contributions extend beyond his personal endeavours, playing a significant role in influencing a generation of collectors, dealers and specialists, and establishing noteworthy art collections. His expertise and guidance facilitated the placement of major works in the permanent collections of renowned museums worldwide. Additionally, he has lent his advisory services to major private collectors, royal families and institutional collectors across the globe.
Today Bashir Mohamed remains an avid collector and enjoys widespread recognition as a global authority in the field of Islamic and Asiatic art. His enduring passion and knowledge continue to contribute to the enrichment of this artistic domain.1of 3
